Let us watch your model in the making, from when you open the kit to air-borne! Don't feel you have to chronicle every step, unless you want to. Just send an occasional picture or two and an explanatory note and we can catch up with your progress from time to time on this page. It will only appear when there's something to report and we can keep as many projects going as you wish. I must reserve the right to select and crop pictures, though, otherwise the page will take too long to download.

IAN NELSON'S TOP-FLITE P51-D MUSTANG - Part 2

I have now completed the tailplane and the fin and rudder. All were very easy to put together but with enough cutting and construction to keep my interest up. I sheeted the tail and fin so that the structure will not be affected by the onset of the damp weather.

With those finished, I turned my attention to the wing. Again following the instructions ensures a simple build with rapid results. The quality of the die-cutting is excellent, no need to use a knife, all parts just push out of the sheet; all that is needed then is just to 'dress' the surface with some fine sandpaper.

The wings are built upside down and on the opposite wing plan. Confusing at first, but this is because the rib jig tabs are on the rib top surface. You do have to keep this in mind as you go along. To keep the parts together I have used cyano (medium and thin) on most of the construction. For the parts that I consider high stress (spar shear webs, retract doublers, etc.) I have used PVA. I will be using epoxy to join the wings and on the retract rails.

Hopefully by the next issue I will have joined the wings and perhaps part sheeted them.
