SOARING SOCIETY believe that they are the UK's only radio-controlled model
club strictly for scale gliders.
The Club has been in existence since
January 1999, and was formed simply to help promote UK scale gliding to
ensure "that this most elegant side of the r/c hobby has a continuing
high profile".
The
Club has a pleasing web site from webmaster Simon Dobby (congratulations
on your recent marriage, Simon), containing
some interesting material, highlighting Past and Future Events, Member's
Photos, More About What We Do and Links.
The page on past events carries some
interesting write-ups which give a fascinating insight into this more
specialised branch of radio-control flight and the More About What We Do
page is really most interesting for anybody not already well-informed about r/c
gliding.
There is a nice collection of photos on
Member's Photos (one or two of which are on our photo gallery this issue).
I don't know if you've ever noticed it in the modelling press, but
pictures of these very large gliders frequently include a pretty girl and
I was intrigued to discover that the same additional interest is also
evident here! Perhaps at last we have discovered the one branch of the
hobby that attracts the ladies! Another explanation is that I have
discovered that the pictures on the site are all from professional
photographer and journalist Tony Baker, the same chap who writes in
the modelling press - most notably the monthly Glider Guider feature
in RCM&E! Any way, lovely Becca Allen, pictured here, is
a scale glider fan, so I can legitimately include her here without any
risk of male chauvinist exploitation, or whatever!
The club site does not give any details
of flying sites or regular meetings, etc., but further information is
available from Tony at gliding@Tesco.net
