It's

page, so please join the fun and send some details of yourself, your
family, modelling and other interests and anything else you care to tell us about, and let's get to know you!You can either e-mail your information from the post-box at the
foot of this page or use the Response Form below - and if you've got
a picture of yourself, so much the better! |
| When TOM WIGHTMAN asked to go on
the ModelFlight mailing list I had no idea where he came from,
but when he responded to my invitation to introduce himself through a
personal profile on this issue, I was chuffed to find he comes from
CANADA! |
I'm a Scot who has lived in Canada for
over 30 years. I used to fly control line in the height of the
"Golden Years" of that genre - late 50's through mid 60's, but
lost touch with aeromodelling after emigrating, marrying and raising a
family in Canada (all sounds very familiar I know!). Rediscovered the
sport/hobby about 10 years ago when I found out there was a club (Kincardine
Cloudbusters) in the small town of Kincardine, where I had relocated
after moving jobs.
The club is essentially an R/C only club, although a couple of members
other than myself have flown control line in the past, and one other
still does very occasionally. I have been messing with R/C since joining
the club, most recently electric powered. In the last couple of years I
have had a hankering to try some C/L again, and since I really don't
have enough time to spend on the hobby (retirement a few years away
yet), I find C/L easier to fit in to my schedule. There seems to be less
preparation and maintenance time required. I also think it might be a
better way to attract kids into the sport, since the start up costs,
time, commitment etc., are certainly less demanding at the sport level
than those of R/C, and some disciplines, such as combat, should have
good appeal for the younger crowd. On the other hand, I may be kidding
myself completely, and aeromodelling may be a slowly dying art form.
Let's hope not.!!
The club has a fairly basic web site at www.bmts.com/~wightman
, which I also don't have enough time to maintain, but has the necessary
information for someone to contact us, and also some pictures from our
annual fun-fly's... well, I haven't actually managed to get last years
pics in yet...
Professionally I'm a physicist working in the nuclear power industry. I
am married and have two grown up sons, both of whom have tried
aeromodelling, but neither of which is actively involved now.
Thank you, Reg, for your efforts in bringing us ModelFlight. Lang may
yer lum reek!
Tom's club website is a good browse
and well worth a visit - it is unusual in that it carries some really good shots of models in
flight which are so tricky to capture successfully; I've put a couple up on our photo
gallery.
Tom's comments on control line are
interesting - see also site seeing for
some nice Australian nostalgia.

Join in the fun, send ModelFlight an
e-mail and tell us about yourself, your family, hobbies and interests, what you
do for a living, how long you've been model-making, what club you belong to,
etc. - in fact as much or as little as you see fit. Include a picture of yourself
if you can.
Your
e-mail address will be shown unless you specifically ask for it not to
appear. Picture files ideally need to be in JPG format for
best colour reproduction and to minimise time on-line.
If you want to send me pictures by conventional mail, my address
is
