Some time ago, Geoff Graham
recommended
an Acrylic lacquer for those who are sensitive to dope type finishes.
Then he said that there was a also dedicated sanding sealer available and that he would
let me know how good that was. Well, Geoff has now obtained some and
says he cannot recommend it too highly for balsa. It gives a superb
finish even after one application and it really makes you look forward
to applying the film/Solartex finish on to such a smooth wooden surface.
It costs about £11 a litre and carriage to UK
addresses is over £6, but it may be possible to buy it locally from a
good woodworking type shop, thus making it much cheaper.
It can be ordered online from http://www.toolpost.co.uk/system/index.html
and Geoff says their service is superb.

Here's
something that nicely compliments Geoff's recommended product! I came
across this Hook and Loop Sanding Block Kit in Halfords (a major
UK car and bike accessory store) and immediately decided it was worth
adding to my model-making kit.
It consists of a 2½" x 4¾" x
1½" sanding block made of two layers of foam, one high density and
the other soft. Each face is covered in a Velcro™-type hook material
and supplied with the kit are five abrasive sheets of varying grades,
each backed with a soft loop material. The sheets simply fix to the base
of the block for immediate use. Abrasive sheet refills can be obtained,
although clogged sheets can be re-used several times by simply peeling
them off the sanding block and tapping the back to remove dust. I've
already made good use of the kit and consider it a good find! The kit
costs £4.99 and a 5-sheet refill pack costs £1.99 |
