| York Model Aircraft Society was
founded in 1938; the club currently has over 70 members and provides
excellent facilities for powered and silent flight enthusiasts. A
newsletter, York Flier, is published every quarter in which club
members and articles on aspects of modelling are featured.
YMAS has two flying sites, their main site being at
Bossall where flying can take place 'any day, any time'. This site, just
a few miles north-east of the city of York, is described as being
'typically English countryside' where, on occasions, wild deer can be
seen on the fringe of the adjacent wood.
The club's second site is at Elvington, available at
weekends only, other specific arrangements permitting. The site is
actually a Second World War bomber station which has since been
maintained as a standby runway. It is ideal for large scale, aerobatic
and sports flying and is also the venue for BMFA, Pylon Association and
British Aerobatic Association events. Elvington is the home of the
Yorkshire Air Museum which houses a Halifax and Victor amongst its
static exhibits.
York MAS holds a club meeting on the third Monday of
each month when, in addition to any club business, talks are given by
invited guests on any aspect of modelling or perhaps a quiz night is
run; the March meeting featured a talk on 'Hinges, Linkages and Computer
Radios'. There is a busy programme of club events throughout the year
including glider, aerobatics and fun-fly competitions. Summer evening
fun-flys are an attractive proposition with an enjoyable evening's
flying being concluded with fish and chips for supper - my mum came from
Yorkshire and always maintained theirs are the best!
The club website emphasises that newcomers are
particularly welcome, so even though it's a little distance from
Dennis's new home, I reckon he could enjoy this club!
