If your national flag isn't shown, it's because you haven't written to ModelFlight yet . . . !

My thanks to Joćo Freire for his kind comments on the last issue.

Welcome to Dennis Watson and Safak Yardimci who have joined the mailing list since the last ModelFlight. Meet Dennis on personal profiles and Safak at the top of the post box!

I was delighted to hear from SAFAK YARDIMCI from Turkey and to hoist his national flag!

Dear Reg;

I'm from Turkey, and I am interested in model flight and willing to learn everything about how to build a model. I'd like to make my model and am planning to teach to my 2-months old son in the future. Here in Turkey, RC control planes are not very usual, because of their price.

I'm planning to buy a kit of plane parts and build at home, but I'm very new on this. Therefore I'm always open to any info about RC, of course, from  persons like you.

Thank you very much for your kindly interest.

A very sincere welcome to ModelFlight, Safak.

If you are able to order through the Internet you should be able to obtain models at reasonable prices from USA and other overseas suppliers (but watch out for import charges, I suppose?).

I wonder what sort of model kit you might be thinking about. You could go for an ARTF like the ARC READY or the TIGER TRAINER or, if you really want to build, something like the FLAIR CUB which beginner Mike Masters built so successfully recently - you can choose to have it with a foam wing or you can build the wing yourself. If you go to the take your pick page, I've repeated the feature on Mike's plane which appeared on 'models in the making' a couple of issues ago.

MARCO MACHADO writes from Belo Horizonte, Brazil

Hi Reg!

I'm Joćo's webmaster and I fly with aircraft models in Belo Horizonte - second biggest city in Brazil.

Every week I always say to Joćo that it's very difficult to find good websites on the Internet. I call good websites, sites where I can found interesting information about my 2nd love... the aircraft models... (the first is my girlfriend... ehheheh!).

In special, congratulations for your text about how to make decals... It's very easy to learn and with the pictures its very very good!

Well, now I will be a constant visitor to website... Sorry about my English - I was an English teacher years ago, but I haven't been practicing lately...

I'm 22 years old and have been flying aircraft models for about 1 year in Belo Horizonte, one of the biggest and most important cities in Brazil. Belo Horizonte in English means "Beautiful Horizon" because we have many mountains around the city! In these mountains many people practice aero-sports.

I work with internet since its start in Brazil for about 6 years. I develop e-commerce systems and work with web design and animation too.

My pictures with my models are on my computer and another day I will send some.

Now I'm sending a picture from my city, the city of the mountains in Brazil!

Regards,

Good to meet you, Marco. I look forward to putting some of your pictures up on the photo gallery. Geoff Graham's decal-making article was certainly very good, and I'm glad you liked it.

From Viper (Joćo Freire):

Sincere thanks for your page (re Helimodelling, on #28).

I wish to tell you that we also host a live CHAT!!!

. . . Good job on your web, and please give me your link and I'll insert it on my links page.

mestreviper@uol.com.br

Thanks, Viper; glad you liked your item on last time's 'site seeing' and thank you for the link.

Viper is one of the subjects on this issue's personal profile page.

Pleased to hear from BOB NICOL again - ModelFlight's most faithful supporter!

Hi Reg,

Braved the wrath of the wife, went flying when I had flu -  it was worth it.

Should have some pics for you, this week. You didn't give me any feedback on the jokes, feel free to use any that you want...

sideshow.bob@virgin.net

I hope you didn't get hit too hard by the flu, Bob - or by your wife, either! I look forward to your pics. I couldn't find any model-flight jokes, but if you want a good laugh, visit Bob's joke site  -  what sort of jokes you look at is up to you, of course!

I am delighted to welcome Ves, our first active rubber-powered enthusiast:

Hi;
Just came online, geverton@aol.com

My interests are rubber powered old timers - Gollywocks, Smiths, Miss Canada, etc. Have a Taylorcraft 057 36" under construction at the moment. I have a question? Pete Bowers FLY BABY is that legal for scale? Lee Campbell seemed to remember it won a scale event nationally.

By the way where is Lee now, would like his latest address.

I know the Dynaflite 1/4 scale i.c. powered Fly Baby is legal for large-scale competitions - Dynaflite say their kit is "a natural choice for IMAA events", but I am afraid I know nothing about the rubber-powered world, if that is what you are thinking of Ves - anybody able to answer?

Here's Herr Engineering Corp's 18" rubber-powered Taylorcraft, but I'd love to see more of Ves's 36" version.

Let's see and hear more of the rubber-powered branch of the hobby - if it's your scene, please write and share your enthusiasm, and if you know Lee Campbell's whereabouts, please let Ves know.

Coincidentally, within a few hours of hearing from Ves, I also heard from MICHAEL HENRIKSON who also likes to fly rubber-powered craft. Here, Michael, from xxxxx, Denmark, shares an amusing moment:

michael aloft.jpg (36820 bytes)Here's a little "incident" you might want to post on your site. Sunday I was at an indoor meet and managed to "land" my model on top of the fluorescent light. Fortunately the inspector showed up an hour later and got the lift out. For a moment there I was the center of attention as I was swaying back and forth under the lights. Safely down again I plugged in a fresh battery and flew again!

I would be happy if you would post a link to my site: http://fly.to/epilot

I think you are doing a great job - keep it up :-)

mhenriks@vip.cybercity.dk

Nice to hear from you again, Michael.

Get to know more about Michael on the personal profile page and take a preliminary look at his person website on the site seeing page.

There will be an item from Michael on the indoor flying scene in Denmark on the next update of ModelFlight.

We watched MIKE MASTERS build his Flair Cub on #27 (and it's repeated on take your pick). I asked Mike how he was getting on; here's his reply:

Hi Reg,

Not been in touch for a while as nothing to report, (weather's been awful here). Have had the Cub in the air once since my last mail. However something that might interest you and your readers, I've now installed a radio-controlled camera into the plane. Its a low voltage (9v dc), full-colour CCD chipped board camera, electronic iris to allow for the glare from the sun (fat chance!) and runs at 2.4ghz (microwave), so it won't interfere with the usual radio bands, and should give a transmission range of about 750-1000yards.

As soon as I can get her flying I'll do a more detailed description, with some photos of the camera set-up and the images from the air.

Cheers Reg, happy flying,

Mike

P.S. don't ask about the cigarettes, I'm afraid I'm just too weak!

Matsecsol@aol.com

Never mind about the ciggies then, Mike, at least your attempt to give up got you into model flying!

I will publish Mikes pictures and notes as a full article just as soon as he can get the material to me. It sounds fascinating and I know that a lot of you are interested in aerial photography from a r/c model platform.

  STEVE BOLIN spotted it!

Just wanted to drop a quick line about your "Read All About It" column. I think I spotted the update there.

Would it be your age? I seem to recall it being 62 before . . .

Take care of yourself Reg. I look forward to seeing your next installment tomorrow of Modelflight for sure!

Yes, you spotted it Steven! Another year has gone by and I'm fast approaching the time when I will qualify for my official state pension. Mind you, I've already been retired for three years and have loved every minute of it so far!
