It's true! It would be good to meet YOU on this personal profile page, so please join the fun and send some details of yourself, your family, modelling and other interests and anything else you care to tell us about, and let's get to know you!

You can either e-mail your information from the post-box at the foot of this page or use the Response Form below - and if you've got a picture of yourself, so much the better!

We had a look at Dr JOĆO FREIRE'S website, 'Helimodelling', on the last issue. Here's where we get to know a bit more about Joćo - or VIPER as he is known in model flight circles.

VIPER is 28 years old and is a lawyer, living in Campinas, Brazil. He is married to Roberta, and they have one child - a three-year old XCELL PRO!

Viper has been in the model heli flying game for 7 years (from 1994) and has been flying planes since 1988 and U-control since 1986.

Current model is the afore-mentioned XCell Pro II, ·60 OS customized engine, SAB blades, "with self and nice painted cabins".

Viper is very much into FA1 competition flying and competes at international level. He is twice Vice-Champion of Brazil and was competing at both the 1999 and 2000 World Championships, coming 9th in the latter event. The club he belongs to is known as CASD and is located in Campinas.

In addition to his regular job, Viper also runs his website, Helimodelling, through which he markets Morgan fuels, model helicopter videos, instructional CD-Roms, a small range of accessories and cabin painting. At the moment, this seems very much a labour of love, but he is currently working on selling web banners on his site to help out with the costs of the operation which he otherwise meets himself.

Viper particularly likes to share his model helicopter knowledge with those who need help but who have no-one to ask. "I am like this", he says, "because I had to get it all on my own, so I felt how hard this is. That's why I came up with instructional material, including CD-Roms!"

I asked MICHAEL HENRIKSON if he would like to introduce himself with a personal profile:

I was born July 4th, 1968 in Aalborg, Denmark. I spent a very happy childhood in a small village by the sea with a two year detour to Zambia, Africa. After graduating "Gymnasiet" I spent 9 months in the Royal Danish Airforce (AAA unit). I then went to trade school and worked for some years as an office assistant mainly in import/export. I started on a Bachelors Degree in English but was bored stiff after one-and-a-half years and moved to Copenhagen to work for DHL. Here I eventually landed in the IT department in Nordic Application Support. We got fed up living in Copenhagen and moved back to the Aalborg area.

I currently work as a test-center consultant for KMD (Kommunedata) which is one of the largest IT businesses in Denmark. My wife Hallbera is from the Faroe Islands. We were married in '94 and in '98 we had our daughter Mille who is now two-and-a-half years old. One of her first words was "flyvemaskine" which is Danish for aeroplane. This made me very proud and I hope I can share my hobby with her someday! Hallbera works in a Kindergarten. I greatly admire and love her for her ability to endure my hobbies. Besides model building/flying I have started to construct small autonomous robots and I am trying to learn some programming. I also have a CNC router made from printer junk coming along nicely. Anything mechanical can usually catch my interest. I also like to go fishing but don't go as often as I would like to. We have recently bought a big old house, so there is always some maintenance work to be done. I just wish someone would mow the lawn for me!!

I have been an aero-modeller for the last 20 years. I do not restrict myself to R/C but also enjoy the occasional rubber-powered model. I have flown a bit of control-line, too. Five years ago I built my first electric model, a HLG design that I converted to speed 400 power. I was immediately fascinated by the clean and quiet experience of electric flight. All my IC engines were sold and I have never missed them. I like to build and I love the fact that electric models can be built lightly (no vibration from an engine). It’s also nice to be able to test fly without having painted the model.

I mainly build small electric models from speed 400 motor size and down. Three years ago I got into indoor flying and I am very active in this during the winter season. I like to design my own models and it has been many years since I last touched a kit.

I am Vice President of the club I belong to; Aviators Modelflyvere. We have approximately 30 members and have a big heated clubhouse, a nice R/C field and a fully fenced tarmac C/L circle.

I work in an IT job and use the Internet a lot. I have learned a lot form the "Net" and it has won me new friends from around the world. The Internet is a great place to get in touch with like-minded people and exchange ideas.

Besides aero-modelling I also mess around with small steam engines and I just bought an old Colchester Student lathe that I am restoring to active duty.

I run a small part-time business that imports and sells Pop-Pop boats from India. I have a web page in Danish and English at http://www.tekmek.dk  I am in the process of manufacturing the first batch of small "real" steam engines for boat use.

Thanks very much for that, Michael - it's fun to get to know a bit more about you!

Take a look at Michael's personal website on the site seeing page and see a few of his models on the photo gallery.

DENNIS WATSON, a slope-soarer from Manchester, UK, joined the mailing list since the last update and also kindly responded to my invitation to introduce himself.

Dennis is 66 and retired; he lives in Bolton, Greater Manchester, and is married to Marion. They have two children, Alan (40) and Sue (37).

Pidgeon tower.jpg (36346 bytes)Dennis re-commenced building and flying model RC gliders just about three years ago after a 40-year gap - " Things have changed somewhat since the old days!" he says. Dennis flies with the Rivington Soaring Association on and around Winter Hill north of Manchester. Dennis comments, "This is an excellent site with good slopes in all directions except South-East, and the views from the hill are magnificent, taking in the mountains of the Lake District and Snowdonia, Anglesey and even the Isle of Man on a very clear day." The lovely picture on the left was taken late one evening and shows the dovecote built in the last century (possibly 19th century) by the Lever family (soap makers!) near the flying site above Rivington near Horwich, Lancashire.

Dennis has flown power models years ago but much prefers gliders which he considers quiet, environmentally-friendly and cheap to fly (can't argue about that!), and he particularly enjoys the challenge of flying the plane and bringing it back to base using only thermal and slope-lift with no auxilliary power. Dennis flies various 'sport' models, e.g., Gentle Lady (floater), Middle Phase

dennis and family.jpg (29914 bytes)Dennis is very enthusiastic about the sport which, he says, "has the added advantage of getting me out of the house and into the fresh air (at times extremely fresh air! )in the company of a very pleasant and friendly group of people.

"Another advantage is that this can be a very family-orientated hobby, both at home and on holiday. The attached photo is of myself together with my son, my wife and our black labrador. My three-years old grandson will no doubt be joining us in a few years time."

Besides model flying, Dennis also enjoys walking, sailing, touring (camper) and visits to New Zealand where his daughter, Sue, lives.

Thanks for introducing yourself, Dennis . . . and what's that Marion is flying? I hope we will see more of you and your slope-soarers - please keep in touch.

It was watching some slope-soaring off a sea-facing slope down in Devon, UK, that first made me decide to give fixed wing flying a go. That was when I bought my Easy Pigeon powered glider which I subsequently put on hold whilst getting to grips with the powered trainer. Hopefully, I will get the Easy Pigeon aloft this year.

Join in the fun, send ModelFlight an e-mail and tell us about yourself, your family, hobbies and interests, what you do for a living, how long you've been model-making, what club you belong to, etc. - in fact as much or as little as you see fit. Include a picture of yourself if you can.

Your e-mail address will be shown unless you specifically ask for it not to appear. Picture files ideally need to be in JPG format for best colour reproduction and to minimise time on-line.

If you want to send me pictures by conventional mail, my address is
