  • Here's where we take a look at other websites of model-flight interest. It might be a commercial site or one belonging to another enthusiast or specialist group. Let me know if you've come across a nice site that you think is worth a look - it could, of course, be your site if you let me know your URL!

Here's an interesting English model shop web site that not only offers products from all the major manufacturers - Perkins, Ripmax, Irvine, Flair, Amerang, etc. - but also has an exclusive range of models of their own, many of which have become well known across the world. This range of Galaxy special kits is not available anywhere else in the world!

Galaxy Models & Hobbies was established back in 1975 by the present owners of the business and in the late '70s they produced a range of radio control model kits to which they have been regularly adding ever since. If your model-making interests extend to other disciplines, then you will also be interested to know that Galaxy stock r/c cars, buggies, other road vehicles and accessories as well a a large range of model railway goods by all the leading manufacturers, plus one of the largest plastic kit collections to be found for many a mile. Add to that the fact that the model boat enthusiastic is also fully catered for and you could hardly ask for more!

A visitor to Galaxy's website is greeted with this pleasant opener, with a picture of their attractive 'corner shop' and a tempting view of the Aladdin's Cave within! I wonder just how many 'corner shop' model shops there are actually are in England - I know of several myself.

Further down the main homepage shown here, there follows an introduction to the business and links to the other two pages of the site - Galaxy's Special Kits and Galaxy's Online Shop where you can get down to business. Here you will find listings of their stock under various headings and details of how to order. Galaxy state that mail order is a speciality of theirs, priding themselves on a fast dispatch of orders all over the world.

The Special Kits page carries pictures, descriptions and prices of Galaxy's 21 exclusive models plus some of the special optional extras related to them, whilst the Online Shop page opens up the full stock of coverings and accessories, Dubro scale wheels, Galaxy kits, Kontronik high quality speed controllers and brushless motors, miscellaneous kits, Multiplex kits, radios and accessories, other accessories, r/c cars, buggies and other road vehicles and Super Custom engines and related accessories.

Here's a quick look at two of Galaxy's own special models, just to whet your appetite.

New to the range is this scale model of the famous  England to Australia DH88 Comet racer from the 30's. Its beautiful lines have been faithfully reproduced. It is designed for twin Speed 400 motors, direct drive and 7 cells. It has a 46" foam wing, canopy and top deck and comes with a complete hardware pack. £54.95 excluding postage and packing. There is a special decal set available for a further £4.95

I was querying a few issues back whether anyone had come across a model Microlight, and here I've found one! This is Galaxy's Shadow, a semi-scale model of the popular full-size. It has a 48" wingspan, built-up structure with an aluminium boom and is designed for a ·15 engine. Its handling is said to be very docile, yet modest aerobatics are a dream - Galaxy reckon it flies as well as the real thing. The kit is very complete and includes full-size plan, hardware pack and moulded canopy. This unusual little model costs £45.95 plus postage and packing. I really fancy one!
