  • Here's where we take a look at another website of model-flight interest. It might be a commercial site or one belonging to another enthusiast or specialist group. Let me know if you've come across a nice site that you think is worth a look - it could, of course, be your site if you let me know your URL!

On ModelFlight #20, I said we would be taking a look at the site of John Hubbard's club, CASCADE ROTORY WINGS, but I have to confess I completely forgot that when I prepared #21. I came across my note just as I was ready to download this issue of ModelFlight and therefore too late to do it justice. I'm sorry about that, but the CRW site will be featured on ModelFlight #23.

BOB NICOL is one of the most regular contributors to ModelFlight and I always look forward to receiving his e-mails. We have seen some brilliant model photos, cartoons and comments from Bob. His club, High Peak Model Aero Club, was one of the earlier clubs to appear on the 'club scene' page and there has been a link to High Peak on the 'links' page for a long time. Now we take a look at his club website, which I have visited many times.

The opening page, shown here, displays a comprehensive menu of links to the many pages on the site and the main panel carries links for a local weather report and immediate access to details of the club and a membership form in Acrobat format. There is also a link to the Guest book for both signing and viewing.

Also on the homepage is news of the award of the Peter Derbyshire Trophy 2000 to Dennis Richardson for the best model in the club with his Bristol fighter referred to below. Congratulations also to young Grant Merrick for winning the trophy for most improved newcomer - this young man of around 12 to 13 years of age has progressed from beginner to advanced in something like 4 months!

The website uses a frames design, with the navigation buttons to the whole site being permanently visible in the side frame. There is a wide variety of pages to view, including one or two unusual ones like the Bookstore page and TV Stars which tells of High Peak's moment of fame when they were chosen to feature in a TV documentary. Other pages are About Us, Related Sites (pleased to see a link to ModelFlight there - thanks, Bob!), Who's Who (pictures of club members and officials), Our Planes, Our Helis, Site Pics, Swap Meet, Maps, Visitors, Items for Sale and an e-mail link.

The club Swap Meet is clearly an event well-worth attending - there are pictures on the site from this year's event which show it to be a well-attended occasion with loads of goodies changing hands. The 2001 Swap Meet is advertised for the Sunday after Easter (which makes it Sunday, 15th April, 2001), to be held at Buxton Community School. There's indoor catering and an auction towards the end of the day.

My favourite pages are those featuring club members' models on the Our Planes and Our Helis pages, like these thumbnails of Andy with one of his large collection of helicopters, Richard and his Buckmeister and Terry and his Chipmunk. There are also some pictures of Dennis Richardson's lovely scale models which have appeared on the 'photo gallery' page in the past, a couple of which I use as background wallpaper on my desktop, like the shot of his prize-winning Bristol fighter at bottom right.

It's a big site with lots of information and pics, and it's very nicely maintained by High Peak's webmaster who just happens to be - you've guessed it - Bob Nicol!
