| Here are a couple of guys who have really put a lot into our
hobby . . . |
| Meet CARL LADEN from
Newfoundland
Carl
is a member of St John's R/C Flyers
and is also President of the
Atlantic Zone of the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada.
Carl
grew up (although he says he's not sure if he is completely grown up!)
in Newfoundland mostly. Aviation has always been a large part of his
life with his first experience of flying being when he was just two
years old! His Dad took him flying in a Piper PA22 Colt and he still has
the logbooks to prove it. Carl graduated
from Memorial University of Newfoundland with a B.Sc in Physics. He was
married to Pam in June 1990 and she is usually with him when he
attends fun-flys and is very supportive of his hobby. This may partly be
explained by the fact that they have an agreement that for every dollar
he spends on planes, she spends a dollar on sewing or painting
supplies. After spending some ten
years in New Brunswick with NBTel, Pam and Carl moved back to
Newfoundland in July last year, where Carl currently works with XWave
solutions as a systems analyst. If you're curious to know a bit more
about XWave, visit http://www.xwavesolutions.com Carl
has been aero-modelling since he was 6 - first with 5-cent balsa
gliders. He graduated to plastics at nine, then on to control-line and
rockets. He first became interested in R/C in 1979 whilst watching two fellows flying
in a field across from his home in Pasadena, Newfoundland. He
still keeps in touch with them, one of them - Fred Colbourne - being a
fellow-member of St John's. Now Carl flies 'anything with wings' but no
helis - yet! Most of his flying is sports scale planes; Caps, Extras and a
Citabria and he has a few warbirds around. Much of his modelling time
is spent designing and drawing planes. Carl
reckons that for him the most enjoyment he gets from the hobby is the
people. "I thoroughly enjoy attending events and the people really
make this hobby. The fellowship of this hobby is its greatest
attribute" he says. laydenc@nbnet.nb.ca |
| . . . and here is TORE
LOODIN from Stockholm, Sweden
TORE
is 75 years of age, a retired former defence purchasing manager and
describes himself as 'a real old-timer, born two years before Charles
crossed the Atlantic'! He is married to Anna-Lena and has a
family of three children and three cats - Björn (45), Annika (42),
Nils (20), Caesar the Siamese (9), Bolling the Norwegian (7) and Truls
the Persian (3).
Tore has been an avid
R/C flyer for 35 years, flying and competing in all of the R/C classes.
These days he prefers to fly old-timers, partly because they fit his
age, he says, and partly because they are beautiful to look at, the sun
shining through their framework - as the above picture of Tore with his Astro
Viking nicely demonstrates, even when its not airborne. Tore
has to go to the field by bus or train and sometimes on his moped, so he
has to make his models 'detachable' by using strap-on landing gear,
wings built in halves and fin separated from stabiliser and fuselage -
they call him the 'mopedflyer'! For the same reason, he has now begun to
build small 1/2 A and 'arkflyer' models which, he reckons, also sharpen
his slackening reflexes. Last holiday, he
had the luck to pinpoint the only wind and rain-free day this summer for
an old-timer meeting south of Stockholm. The meeting attracted 16
participants who all got free hotdogs and Coca Cola. Tore got second
place with his Super Scorpion which caught a thermal and stayed aloft
for 12 minutes after an allotted time of just one minute - perhaps not
quite correct for an organiser of the meeting, he comments! As
well as old-timers and the 1/2 A scale models, Tore also likes to fly
free-flight indoors and has a variety of some 20 models hanging from his
ceiling. His outdoor fleet consists of his Astro Viking, 170cm
span, ·20 4S from an Astro kit; Playboy Senior, both pylon and
coupé versions, 200cm span, OS ·45 4S from a Ben Buckle kit; Super
Scorpion, 200cm span, 0S ·45 4s also from a Ben Buckle kit and a Curtiss
Robin, 110cm span, ·049 from a Flyline kit. Tore
is actually the founder member of Stockholm's Radioflygclubb. 35
years ago he was unable to gain access to the only existing club in
Stockholm and at that time he was wanting to take part in the Swedish
R/C championships for which club membership was a requirement, so he
formed a new club which is now the largest R/C club in Sweden! A great
story, don't you think? I'm gathering some more information on this club
and hope to feature it on a future ModelFlight. Tore's
pioneering spirit is also shown in the way that he was responsible for
the first Pylon, Scale and Schneider Cup races, Old-timer and Mini-R/C
meetings in Sweden. Tore is now an honorary member of
Radioflygclubb and several other R/C clubs in the neighbourhood of
Stockholm. Tore's other interests include
water painting, computers and writing - of ModelFlight he
very kindly says, "Rather very good site this! Earlier I have
missed it, but now incorporated it in the favourites". tloodin@hotmail.com |
