JOHN HUBBARD writes from Independence, Oregon, USA
Hi Reg
On a helicopter note, I am sure you have heard of this guy Bob Johnston.
I don't know where he lives over there in jolly old England. He is the
equivalent of our very own Curtis Youngblood. You need to go see him fly
- I have seen videos of him, he is damn good at it. And if you have any
questions about helis that you can't get answered over there, please
give me a try.
cya later.
rcpilots@worldnet.att.net
I saw Bob Johnston fly
his Millenium at Sandown Park, UK, early in May - it was really awesome!
He concluded a spectacular display by commencing an autorotation (engine
disengaged, for those not into helis) from a tremendous height and then
performing aerobatics all the way down to a perfect landing!
Thanks, John, for the
offer of help and advice as well - much appreciated. Requests for help are very welcome as I'm sure that with folk like John around, we
have a wealth of experience we can tap into amongst ModelFlight
readers and contributors.

CRAIG TRICKETT from Newfoundland,
Canada, wrote again after seeing his club featured on ModelFlight
#14.
I just had a quick look at the new
issue. Good job. I was surprised to see the info on our club there so
soon, but very glad.
. . . Our funfly went ahead a
couple of weeks ago as I said, but our guy with the digital camera was
out of town so the only pics I got are still in my camera waiting for
development. There are several other pics around from a previous
funfly at Harbour Grace that I will send. We will be attending a big
funfly at Gander International airport next weekend. There will be lots
of pics from that one.
We will be giving our website a
facelift in the next few weeks. It should be a lot faster now as well .

Glad you liked your club
feature, Craig, and thanks for the promise of some photos. There is
another contribution from Craig on the air space page
as well. One of the things I like about this web publishing lark is the
way I can generally get contributions on the web that come to me right
up to a few hours before I upload the update - a bit different than the
several weeks that conventional publishing requires!

| Here's our youngest correspondent so
far. KENNY KENNARD writes from Cornwall,
UK.
My name is Kenny. I am 14 and I live in Bude,
Cornwall. I really want to get into the hobby of r/c airplanes. My friend
told me that when he was younger, he was in a club where he learnt to
fly, so I was wondering if there are any clubs near Bude?
kenny_loves_ya@jahoo.co.uk
I've already given Kenny the BMFA
listing of clubs in Cornwall. Unfortunately, the BMFA do not publish
contacts, so he will have to get in touch with them to obtain any details of
suitable clubs on the list. Anybody else able to help, please contact
him through his e-mail address, if you can take it seriously! By the
way, there are underscore lines between the words of the first part of
the address, i.e. kenny_loves_ya |
. . . and our oldest,
also from Cornwall. DENIS WOLFF (66) was profiled on ModelFlight #12
and is a diesel fan.
Just been reading latest Smallnet which is
besotted with screaming Cox's. I have a few diesels; I checked with an
AE 1.5 today - on a 10" x 5" prop it did 5,500 revs and at
half throttle was very quiet (3,000 revs).
I asked Denis what it was about diesels that he liked
so much. Here's his reply.
I mainly use diesels or 4-stroke glow. Diesels
throttle nicely, smell nice and up to 5 cc. don't need a starter - so
you go flying with r/c aircraft, transmitter and a can of fuel in your
pocket! You can buy ready-made fuel or mix your own; 1/3 good paraffin,
1/3 ether, 1/3 castor oil - the latter two I buy from chemist in Tesco.
PAW and Irvine make good engines. I have from ·75 cc to 8 cc, some
vintage - they take bigger props, don't scream and get torque low down.

Thanks Denis. Any chance you can help young Kenny find
a club? Keep in touch!
