Home PageHi friends,In the modelling press at least, there often seems to be a suggestion that flying model helicopters is not serious r/c flying at all and those who do fly helis are just a bit inferior to the 'plank' flyers. The editor of one magazine, for instance, was almost apologetic recently when he decided to try his hand with a heli, although now he's given it a go he seems to be finding it quite a challenge! I daresay that reciprocal feelings may be held by some heli pilots, although I have yet to see it expressed. Some clubs don't cater for both disciplines, although that sometimes may be for quite genuine practical reasons, and even where they do, it doesn't always work out as you will read on the 'club scene' page. I have to say, though, I have not come across anything like this at my own club, where it seems that quite a few would quite like to try a heli. In my own very limited experience of flying both types of model, I have found that each has its own particular challenges, but both are great fun and equally enjoyable. I find flying the heli to be much more demanding in terms of concentration, and the inherently unstable flying characteristics of a helicopter does mean that you are working the sticks all the time, albeit ever so gently! To see an expert throwing a helicopter around the skies can be very impressive, but my own favourite experience is just to have the machine hovering at about ten feet over at 1 o'clock and then coming down to a gentle touch-down! On the other hand, fixed wing flying seems just a bit more relaxed to me - the greatly increased height certainly gives me just a bit more time to think - and as I get used to focussing my myopic vision on this tiny flying object out on the horizon, I find it more and more enjoyable! No aerobatics yet, but I love to see her on a low slow fly-past and nothing beats flaring her out for a nice smooth landing. What's your favourite flying experience? Regards to all, |
