If your national flag isn't shown, it's because you haven't written to ModelFlight yet . . . !

Had a good bit of flying recently or has the weather let you down?
Enjoyed visiting a show?
Learned something new and feeling chuffed about it?
Had a spectacular crash?
Bought a new model?
One of the kids started in the hobby?
How's that new kit progressing?
Got a question that someone might be able to answer?

There must be lots you can write to ModelFlight about, so click on the post-box at the top of the page and get in touch!

welcome to NAJEF ABU ITA from the Netherlands - the first letter ever from Europe and another flag on the banner!

Hi,
My name is Najef and I live in the Netherlands. I have just bought a trainer for "beginners", but it was quite difficult to build if you have never built something before. It's now ready and awaits to be checked by my Club, and then the fun begins, hopefully without any crashes.

Welcome to ModelFlight, Najef. I agree that the first build can be tricky, but I reckon it is well worth the effort. It's great to be in a club so that someone with experience can check it over, especially the servo and radio settings. If your trainer has ailerons, it seems all too easy to have them set up the wrong way round - I did it with my glider and I've heard of others doing it too!
Tell us more about yourself for a personal profile, keep us posted on your progress and maybe you can send us a picture of your plane . . .

Hi Reg
You put a lot of effort into your modelflight www site
[that's what my wife thinks too, Rob - Reg] -I think it's one of the best sites of its kind on the 'net. Thanks for publishing my letters, etc.
Some suggestions:
A "history" section where previous issues and articles are available;
A "helicopter" section for weirdos like me!

Rob Sherratt

rob.sherratt@lineone.net

Thanks as ever for the compliment, Rob - much appreciated.
You flatter me with the idea of a history section! Interestingly, a chap at my club also asked me the other day if back-numbers were available to view.
I'm not really sure how many folk would want them and I'm also not really sure how to do it! I guess the files would have to be permanently uploaded to my service provider (Freeserve) and my history section would simply have links to the files for folk to retrieve if they want to see them. If that is the route, then I would gradually be filling up my 15 MB of webspace provided by Freeserve.
As far as a specialised section for helis is concerned, I will publish any interesting heli material that comes my way, but I wouldn't be able to fill a regular section on my own. I've re-named the 'plane talk' page to 'air space' so it doesn't appear exclusive to fixed wing subjects, and that can be used for all editorial-type items on any model-flight-related topic.  I'm also keen to avoid starting new pages and then having to shut them down through lack of contributions, as I had to do with my 'swap shop' and 'hints & tips' pages. Mind you, if you would like to compile a regular or occasional item, then I'd be very pleased to launch 'Rob's heli-pad'!

. . . and that offer for an occasional page on a specific topic is open to all, of course. Click on the post-box and say something to me now!
from MIKE NORTON

I am the newsletter editor for a local R/C club in Huntsville, Alabama. Can I use some of your pictures?

Our club website is

Nice to know you thought they were worth sharing, Mike. Not being aware of any copyright on the pictures used on ModelFlight (except the RAF Benevolent Fund pic on #8) I was happy to give Mike the go-ahead. Maybe we'll hear more from Mike for a future update.

ALLAN KNIGHTS has been in touch again, also with a similar theme to Rob's e-mail above . . .

Hi Reg
Web site is looking good. I would like to see a bit more scale though. I'm slowly getting some pictures together and a profile . . . off on holiday next.

allanknights@lineone.net

Thanks Allan. I take your point about more scale. In fact, I would love to see a few items on specific 'specialisations' such as gliders, free-flight etc., but it all depends on who reads and responds to the invitation to participate in ModelFlight. If I get it, you'll see it! Coincidentally, though, you'll find quite a number of good scale model pics in  this update.
I hope you enjoy a good holiday and I look forward to your pictures and profile in due course.

. . . and BOB NICOL thought this might amuse us:

See Bob and his Mustang on the photo gallery page.

Finally, BOB COWELL sent me this in response to my promoting ModelFlight on one of the r/c newsgroups - and I think he might also have posted it on the newgroup itself, but I'm not really sure.

Not to put TOO fine a point on it, BUT if your site was as wonderful as you claim, would it REALLY be necessary to tout it here [referring to the newsgroup] on a nearly DAILY basis?????
The answer is NO, because others would happily refer to your site as a source of information if there was a reason to do so.
In addition, MANY of us REFUSE to just randomly click on provided links in these messages.

bobc@kdsi.net

My full reply to Bob and the newsgroup readers was as follows:

Firstly, no offence meant.
Secondly, I have never made any claims as to how "wonderful" the site is. I have referred to how much fun it is, and that is a direct reflection of the comments made to me by the increasing number of people who are enjoying the site.
Thirdly, I do not "tout" the site on a daily basis as Bob claims (he actually said "nearly" daily basis, to be accurate). I do promote it twice a week generally, after I realised that the speed of turnover of messages on the newsgroup meant that a lot of folk might not see a mention of it if they visit at less frequent intervals than others. From the issue that I first started this more frequent mention of the site, my visitor numbers increased dramatically. It is not a necessity to promote the site at all - I get no gain from the site other than the tremendous fun of having widened my circle of friends in the hobby and the pleasure of knowing how much some people enjoy the site. It is not primarily a "source of reference"; it is a source of fun and pleasant good-natured friendly contact for those who may wish to respond.
Fourthly, I provide the link to my site because it was suggested to me to do this by another regular newsgroup user. He told me that it would make it easier for folk to visit my site if I gave the full URL, and I accepted his advice. I continue to respect his view, as my visitor numbers would appear to prove.
Finally, we are all free to respond to newsgroup messages as we wish. If Bob and others "refuse" to click the link, that's entirely up to them, but I see no necessity to shout about it!
Regards to all. By the way, ModelFlight #10 goes on the web tonight. I invite you to have a look - I think you may be interested in what you will find.

Clicking on my provided link is not a "random" event - users choose either to do so or not and my message always gives a reasonable clue as to what the site is about. And that's as much as I'm going to say on that one. I have no intention of getting involved in one of those 'flame wars' that Frank refers to in his item on the air space page - it's totally unnecessary and will certainly spoil the fun!
